Synopsis

Concealed high in the mountains, sometime in the 1950s, enveloped in snow, is an old sanatorium inhabited by three women: an authoritative mother and her two daughters, Maria and Sabina. They’ve never met a man, as their mother keeps them hidden from the world. The sisters try to spot the men that are predestined to be theirs, at least in their dreams, but the same one appears to both... Maria Sabina is portrayed with magical realism. The realistic aspect lies in the story: two sisters’ love for a young minister who has escaped from his captors during the era’s anti-church campaign. But beware, for this film is neither political nor an attempt at historical accuracy. The story’s apparent realism and timeframe are just the foundation for the film’s central metaphor – the young man loves one sister, but the other sister – whom he has never touched – gives birth to a baby. Why?
