Synopsis

This film adaptation of Jaroslav Havlíček's last novel is a melancholy portrayal of a boy's holiday idyll and his first taste of adolescent love. The object of Emil's affection is Dora, one of five daughters born to a country doctor named Hanzelín (taken together, the first syllables of their names make up the film's title). Dora is unique among the sisters in her willingness to break family tradition and take off for the big city with a magician. Jaromil Jireš's film emphasizes the gently nostalgic atmosphere of Emil's first erotic attachment.
