Petr Václav's feature film debut oscillates between a societal investigation and a stylized psychological drama. A Romany boy, raised FROM birth in an orphanage and suffering emotional failures, quite naturally grows up INTO a hardened personality ready to start a life of crime: it ends only with his suicide in prison. This sophisticated 'portrait of a social problem' excels by means of stylization and meticulous work with nonactors.
