Synopsis

Tomáš and Jana\'s adventure in love begins in Prague just after the creation of the First Czechoslovak Republic. Their impulsive 'escape to Budín' means not only a chance for the unhappy Jana to get away from her psychologically unstable mother, but also the beginning of a troubled marriage. The couple set up house on a farm in Slovakia owned by Tomáš's vital and unconventional father, Štefan. But soon after the marriage Jana begins to realize how hedonistic and internally barren Tomáš actually is. At the same time she finds herself drawing closer to Štefan. The marital crisis is made all the worse by the farm's impending bankruptcy. The family tries to make a go of it in Vienna, but only their return to the prosperity of Prague brings new hope-something different for each of them.
