Jiří Menzel returns to Cannes
Prague, 18 May 2005 – Jiří Menzel presented his latest film project, I Served the King of England, at the Czech-Polish-Slovak Pavilion in Cannes yesterday.Jiří Menzel has returned to Cannes after a long hiatus in order to present another Hrabal adaptation, this time of the famous novel I Served the King of England, in the pavilion organized by Czech Film Center in cooperation with AQS and Bioscop representatives Tomáš Hoffman and Petr Zempliner.
More than 40 festival guests and filmmakers from all over the world joined the renowned director for a glass of champagne at the pavilion to celebrate the new project.
“Thank God Czech cinematography has managed to consolidate under some form of representation. I’m not sure how far it’s all progressed yet, that’s the question. But the revolution that wiped out the centralized bodies did it terribly unnecessarily – the whole structure is being rebuilt again, mostly privately. And I believe Czech film was harmed in the process, especially in terms of relations. I wasn’t aware this pavilion existed, but I’m really glad that at least something has finally been established,” says Jiří Menzel.
The presentation of Czech cinematography in Cannes is supported by funding from the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic.
