Czech Film and TV Academy Recommends Something Like Happiness
for an OSCAR

Press release

Prague, 3 October 2005 – Bohdan Sláma’s new film Something Like Happiness has received the most votes from the Czech Film and Television Academy, which will recommend it as the Czech entry for the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Oscar Awards. The film will compete for nominee status in “The Best Foreign Language Film” category, the category’s final nominees will be announced on March 31, 2006.

The third film from screenwriter and director Sláma is a moving story about a fragile relationship between two young people which gradually grows into true love. The cast and the atmosphere are reminiscent of Sláma’s successful debut Wild Bees (Divoké včely), which was not only received enthusiastically by the Czech public but also brought the filmmaker several awards at international film festivals.

Since its domestic premiere, Something Like Happiness has screened and competed at several important festivals. Among those was the San Sebastian Film Festival, where it won a Gold Shell for best film and Aňa Geislerová won a Silver Shell for best actress in a leading role.

The film is the director’s first collaboration with producer Pavel Strnad (Negativ). The main characters are played by a trio of young Czech actors – Tatiana Vilhelmová, Aňa Geislerová, and Pavel Liška. Both actresses have already been introduced to international audiences as European acting talents – Shooting Stars.

The international sales company of Something Like Happiness is Wildbunch (see http://www.wildbunch.biz).
