In this film, Arnošt Lustig, hailed by the Literary Review of London, as "the best living Czech author whose work calls for the Nobel and all other literary prizes," answers existential questions for his daughter. A charismatic eighty-year-old, he sparkles and surprises with imagination, originality and insight. This survivor of the holocaust, fighter and artist, gives meaning to the maze of an irrational world. His words expose the make-up of a human being who has all the hues of human. An adolescent when Hitler was turning millions to smoke, he happened to live through upheavals in history: 1939-1945 in Europe; 1948 in Palestine; 1968 in a Czechoslovakia that woke to freedom that was quickly buried. A film about a remarkable artist whose perception of survival, warmth, balance, and his sense of "I" made him live when others were falling.
