This year's FIDLab program at the upcoming 35th edition of the FIDMarseille (25–30 June), a co-production platform designed to support and promote innovative documentary projects in various stages of development, hosts the Czech Focus with three prominent Czech producers in attendance – Alžběta Janáčková of Silk Films, Matěj Paclík of Breathless Films and Radovan Síbrt of PINK Productions. In adition, the festival offers the French premiere of Lichens are the Way, the latest documentary by Ondřej Vavrečka. And lastly, FIDCampus, a workshop for student filmmakers, will host Juliana Moska and Zdeňka Petrová of FAMU. The Czech Film Fund will be represented at FIDMarseille by Vítězslav Chovanec of the Czech Film Center.

Czech Films in the Official Selection

Lichens Are The Way (CZ, SK), a meditative documentary film by Ondřej Vavrečka (Personal Life of a Hole, De Potentia Dei), which won the AUDIENCE:AWARD at CPH:DOX 2024, is featured in the Other Gems program. Vavrečka's latest in the series of challenging experimental documentaries centers on lichens, offering an organic close-up study of radically different life forms, and of what happens when we turn our attention to beings outside our human scale. Shot in Canada, where lichenologist Trevor and his partner have created a home together in the symbiotic spirit of the subject of their studies. Produced by Vít Janeček of D1film and co-produced by Ondřej Vavrečka, VIRUSfilm (SK) and R.U.R. (CZ).

Czech Focus at FIDLab 2024

Since 2019, the FIDLab has highlighted a focus on a country, inviting a delegation of producers to showcase their current projects and expand their professional network at the very core of FIDMarseille. After Bulgaria, Greece, Belgium, Portugal and Lithuania, for the 16th edition of FIDLab, the Czech Republic was selected. This section is organized with the support of APA, the Audiovisual Producers' Association, a crucial actor in the Czech cinema industry. Among their members, three production companies are invited to attend the FIDLab upcoming edition to represent the promising contemporary Czech production. APA representative Vìt Janeček will also join the delegation. The focus is also organized with the support of the Centre culturel tchèque à Paris and in association with the Czech Film Fund and the Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival.
