The stylish drama Girl America scooped Best Film for producer-director Viktor Tauš at the 2024 Czech Film Critics Awards. A total of seven films were awarded at the ceremony, hosted by satirist Jan Špaček at Prague’s ARCHA+ Theater and broadcast live on Czech Television (ČT). 

Girl America tells a coming of age story of a young orphan in communist Czechoslovakia. A mediation on intergenerational trauma and social dysfunction, it also earned this year’s Audiovisual Achievement Award for production and costume designer Jan Kadlec.

Documentarian Veronika Lišková’s debut feature the psychological drama Year of the Widow won two awards: Best Screenplay for Eugen Liška, and Best Actress for Pavla Beretová as a woman dealing with bereavement, poverty, and bureaucracy.

Best Documentary went to Klára Tasovská’s for her portrait of the Czech photographer Libuše Jarcovjáková, I’m Not Everything I Want to Be.

Best Actor was awarded to Oldřich Kaiser for his performance as a browbeaten everyman in director Jiří Havelka’s social satire The Gardener’s Year.

The innogy Award for new talent went to first-time director Martin Pavol Repka for his family drama March to May. 

The OFFSCREEN award for non-theatrical releases was given to the streaming platform Voyo’s crime series The Markovič Method: Hojer, about a pioneering criminal profiler. Best Short Film was picked up by director Jan Saska for his black-and-white animated romance Hurikan.
